THE ANZAI GALLERYでは7月7日 (金) より、ジェームズ・ハーグ (James Hague)による個展「Inside Out」を開催いたします。肖像画・ポートレートは、最も古い絵画のスタイルの一つです。歴史を振り返って、人類の発展に伴い、私たちは適切な機材を開発し、被写体を最も正確に描写することを追求してきました。しかし、肖像画における正確さは、被写体に似ているかどうかよりも、被写体が本来持っている潜在的な何かをとらえることにあるとハーグは考えています。ハーグのポートレートには、ある種の憂鬱的な暗さがあり、時には被写体が心的に分析にさらされているようにも感じられます。まるで心理的な人物研究としての側面も持っている作品集が、観るものの興味をかきたてらせます。見たままを写すことに重きを置く肖像作家が多い中で、ハーグはそれよりもはるかに深いところに踏み込んでいます。特にハーグの描く瞳は、警戒心はないものの、少し動揺しているような要素を含んでいます。そこには、何か重大なこと、つまり決裂や躍進の崖っぷちに立たされている人々の表情があるのです。そのため、彼らはハーグの前では正直で、少し繊細で、しかし安心しているように見えます。これは、作品を通じて作家が作家以上のものである、もしかすると作家がセラピストのような存在であることを観るものに印象づけます。Lucien Freud (ルシアン・フロイド) の作品に見られるように、ハーグは、グレー、ブルー、パープル、そして人間の肉体を構成する様々な色彩を、淡い色で表現しています。また、陰影を幾何学的な形に分解し表現する方法をとっており、その巧妙なタッチは、作品を近くで見るとよく理解できます。被写体の角ばったポーズに、少しばかりぼやけた幾何学的な描写を取り入れることで、ハーグのポートレートは不完全的で歪んでいるような感覚が生まれ、角度や平面による視覚的な緊張を作り出そうと試みています。視覚で認識できるものとそうでないものの間の絶妙なバランスを保ち、美しさと不可思議さの結びつきを越えて、ハーグの作品を観ることは、観るものが望むなら、作家自身の歩んできたこれまでの人生について多くを学ぶことに繋がるかもしれません。

THE ANZAI GALLERY is pleased to present "Inside Out," the first solo exhibition by James Hauge starting from July 7th, 2023.

Portraits are one of the historical painting practices. Throughout our history, we mankind have sought to develop adequate equipment and to portray sitters in the most accurate way possible. However, Hague believes that accuracy in portraiture is more about capturing something innate in the sitter rather than their resemblance. There is a certain melancholy darkness to Hague's portraits, sometimes as if the sitter is being subjected to psychological analysis. It is as if his portraits are a consequence of a psychological analysis of the sitters. Whilst many portraitists focus on capturing what they can visually perceive, Hague goes much deeper than that. In particular, the eyes depicted by Hague contain an element of being slightly agitated, although not alarmed. There is a look of people who are on the precipice of something serious - a breakdown or a breakthrough. As such, they appear honest, and a little sensitive, but at ease in the presence of the artist. This impresses upon the viewer that the artist is more than an artist, perhaps the artist is like a therapist. As in the work of Lucien Freud, Hague uses muted colours - grey, blue, purple and the various colours that make up the human body. He also uses a method of breaking down and representing shadows into geometric shapes, a deft touch that is best appreciated when the work is viewed up close. By incorporating slightly blurred geometry into the angular poses of his sitters, Hague's portraits create a sense of defectiveness, attempting to create a visual tension between angles and planes. Striking a delicate balance between the visually perceptible and the visually unrecognisable, and transcending the nexus between beauty and eeriness, viewing Hague's work may, if the viewer so wishes, lead to learning much about the artist's own life to date.
