熊本で育ち、ロンドンのセント・マーティンズ大学で学び、現在はスイスを拠点に活動している Teiji Hayamaは、様々な文化的背景に根ざす人物を巧みに用いています。Hayamaの作品は、主にハリウッドを代表するスターたちのポートレートを歪ませる作風が特徴的です。ウォーホルのような鮮やかな色を用いることで、歪まれたスターたちの人物像と、その中に表現された華やかさの間に存在する相対的な関係性を表現しています。

これらのスターの人物像は、現代社会が二次元のイメージに執着していることを象徴しています。ソーシャルメディアの台頭により確立された、オンラインアイデンティティによって定義されるこの世界において、Hayamaの作品は、孤独感や疎外感を観るものにもたらし、完璧な自身の印象を常に助長しようとする私たちに対して、その向き合い方を再検討するように問いかけています。

この度のTHE ANZAI GALLERYでのプレゼンテーションでは、21点の新作を発表いたします。Hayamaにとって2回目となる今回の個展では、「マスカレード（仮面舞踏会）」というテーマのもと、ネットワーク社会の中で生きる私たちが、気が付かぬうちに本音や思惑を隠し、異なる仮面を被って社会と交流してしまう現状に着目しております。マリリン・モンロー、アリアナ・グランデ、ツイッギーといったアイコンたちは、様々なキャラクターやアイテムを取り合わされて描かれており、まるで私たちが本来の自分を隠し何者かになりきっている様子に類似しています。あなたは、どのような仮面を被っているでしょうか。今一度、本当の自分と向き合うことで、見えてくるものがあるかもしれません。

 

THE ANZAI GALLERY is pleased to present "MASQUERADE - The mask that we wear-" the second solo exhibition by Teiji Hayama starting from March 18th. For his second solo exhibition, Hayama will present 21 new paintings and 2 new limited edition prints under the theme of "Masquerade". The exhibition focuses on the current situation in which we live in a networked society and our tendency to interact with others under different masks, concealing our true feelings and intentions without realising it. Modern-day icons such as Marilyn Monroe, Ariana Grande and Twiggy are depicted as a combination of different characters and items, similar to how we hide our true selves and pretend to be someone else. What masks do you wear? HAYAMA's work might unlock your true self once more, and you may be able to see who you really are.
