2021 年 3 月、イタリアを代表する芸術家であるトゥリ・シメティが、91 歳の生涯を閉じました。この偉大な芸術家を追悼すべく、企画展「ZERO - Homage to Turi Simeti & Enrico Castellani -」を開催いたします。 また、トゥリ・シメティと同じく戦後の現代美術に大きな影響を与えたグループ・ゼロの一員であったエンリコ・カステラーニの作品も展示いたします。 グループ・ゼロは 1950 年代にハインツ・マック、オットー・ピエネ によって結成。1960 年代にはギュンター・ユッカーが加入し、その後も、イブ・クライン、ジャン・ティンゲリー、ポル・ビュリ、ダニエル・スペーリなど、 日本では白髪一雄をはじめとする具体美術協会の作家がグループ・ゼロと関わり、展示を開催しました。 グループ・ゼロは過去の伝統的な価値観にとらわれず、新たな環境を見出すことによって、芸術的発見を促すことを目的としました。シンプルな形や色彩、光の表現と日常的な素材を用いることで、ミニマリズムやイタリアのアルテ・ポーヴェラ※1 との親和性を強調しています。 わずか 10 年の間にイタリア、フランス、ベルギー、オランダなどの数々の国に広がり、今も尚アートシーンに影響を与え続けています。

 

※１ 1960 年代後半から 1970 代にかけてイタリアで発展した芸術運動。伝統的な手法や素材にとらわれない製作を行い、土や布、小枝など様々な素材を用いている。アルテ・ポーヴェラでは商業化された現代のギャラリーシステムに反抗し、その価値観を壊すことを目指しました。

 

 

Turi Simeti トゥリ・シメテイ (1929‐2021)

​

1929 年にイタリア・シチリア島で誕生。1958 年にローマに移り住んだ後、抽象画家であるアルベルト・ブッリと出会い、アーティストとしての活動をスタートさせました。抽象的、ミニマリズムであったブッリの作品の数々は今日のシメティのスタイルに非常に影響しています。 その後 1965 年にシメティはミラノで開催された「Zero Avantgarde」展に若いアーティストと共に参加。この展示の中心人物として注目を集めたシメティの作品は、世界中のギャラリーや美術館で展示され、リオデジャネイロ近代美術館（ブラジル、リオデジャネイロ）、 ムセイオン、ボルツァーノ近代・現代美術館（イタリア、ボルツァーノ）、ヴィルヘルムハック美術館（ドイツ、ルートヴィヒスハーフェン）などの著名なコレクションに参加しました。

イタリア芸術の真のパイオニアと言われたシメティの作品は、幾何学形の中でも楕円を使用した構成が特徴的です。 単色のキャンバスに、楕円形の突起物を用いて動きを表現することで、まるで彫刻のような質感を生み出し、光と形が織り成す独特のダイナミズムと優雅な動きを探求しています。 また独自のスタイルを確立したことが納得できる言葉を、シメティはインタビューで以下のように答えています。

“私はインスピレーションを信じず、自分の仕事を信じています。ある方法でやりたいと思うし、それを実行しようとします。 インスピレーションというのは、古い言葉で、詩人には合うけれども、芸術家には合わない。芸術家は考え、決断し、仕事をする。私は美しいものを見て、それに取り組みますが、インスピレーションは私には似合いません。”

Enrico Castellani エンリコ・カステラーニ (1930-2017)

 

イタリア・ヴェネト州のカステルマッサで誕生。1950 年代～ 1960 年代のイタリアにおける抽象芸術の発展に大きく貢献したアーティストの一人。ゼログループの一員としても活躍しました。ベルギーで彫刻・絵画・建築を学んだ後、1956 年にイタリアに帰国、1959 年にはピエロ・マンゾーニと共にギャラリー” Azimuth” を立ち上げ、同時に関連雑誌” Azimuth” を創刊するなど、芸術そのものの再定義を目指した活動を行いました。 カステラーニの代表作は芸術と空間、建築を融合させることで絵画の枠を超越した「光の絵画」。単色のキャンバスの表裏に釘を打ち込み、表面に明暗をつける表現を行うことで独自のスタイルを確立しました。 その後、60 年以上にわたって様々な素材、質感、色彩を表面の立体感や明暗の調整を行いながら追求しました。

 

本展の開催が両作家についての理解を深め、彼らの作品を皆様の心に残して頂く機会となれば幸いです。

We are pleased to announce an upcoming exhibition “ ZERO-Hommage to Turi Simeti & Enrico Castellani “ to celebrate the two Italian master’s artistic talent. As mentioned in the title of the exhibition, “ZERO” is an artist group ZERO. ZERO is an artists group formed by Otto Piene in the late 1950’s in approach to art making which used light, forms and space. According to Group ZERO, ZERO is meant to evoke’ a zone of silence[out of which develops] a new beginning. As a merorial to Turi Simeti’s career, in the exhibition, We present body of works created during his late years.

Group ZERO was formed by Otte Piene and Heinz Mack. They were joined in 1960 by Gunther Uecker. There were a number of other artists who associated or exhibited with Zero, most notably Yves Klein and Jean Tinguely, as well as Pol Bury and Daniel Spoerri.

Group ZERO fostered an artistic approach by promoting a new environment without being unconstrained by traditional value in art. Group ZERO highlighted the group's affinities with Minimalism and Italian Arte Povera ※1 in calling for simple forms, colors and expressions of light and using everyday materials. Within only 10 years, this style became recognised in many countries such as Italy, France, Belgium and the Netherlands and have still been influencing art scenes today.

※1 Arte povera was a radical Italian art movement from the late 1960s to 1970s whose artists explored a range of unconventional processes and non traditional 'everyday' materials such as soil, cloth and twig. In using such throwaway materials they aimed to challenge and disrupt the values of the commercialised contemporary gallery system.

Turi Simeti(1929‐2021)

​

Simeti was born in Sicily, Italy in 1929. He moved to Rome in 1958 and met the famous abstract painter Albetto Burr, which led him to work as an artist. Burri was abstract and minimarist, and a lot of his work has been greately influencing Simeti's style. In 1965, he was included in "ZERO Avantgarde", an exhibition of young artists held in Milan. His work gathered a lot of attention as the central figure in the exhibition ,which contributed to the fact that his work has been exhibited in galleries and museums worldwide, and is included in the famous collections such as the Modern Art Museum in Rio de Janeiro (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil), Museion, the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art of Bolzano (Bolzano, Italy), and the Wihelm-Hack-Museum (Ludwigshafen, Germany). Simeti's work as a pioneer of Italian art has composed of dynamic patterns of ovals. He plays the shape of light and color created by the oval’s on monochromatic canvas, which produces sculptural texture, and he explores the unique dynamism and graceful movement that exist between light and shape. He explains how his work has established his unique style in an interview.

“I don’t believe in inspiration, I believe in work. I think I want to do things in a certain way and I try to do them. I don’t know inspiration, it is an old word that suits poets but not artists. Artists think, decide, and work. I see beautiful things and I try to work on them, inspiration does not suit me.”

 

Enrico Castellani (1930-2017)

Castellani was born in Castelmassa, located in the Veneto region of Italy. He is one of the artist who significantly contributed to the development of avant-garde art in Italy in the 1950s and 1960s, and he also worked as a member of the Group ZERO. He studied engraving, painting, architecture in Belgium and then he went back to Italy in 1956. Castellani and Piero Manzoni founded the Milan gallery Azimut and the associated journal "Azimuth" in 1959. They conducted business that focused on redefining art itself. He is best known for his "paintings of light" that merge art, space and architecture to transcend the confines of painting. He hammered nails on monochromatic canvas and shaded in the surface, which established his style. He has been pursuing a variety of materials, texture, colors with adjusting three-dimensional shapes and lighting on the surface for 60 years.
